In 2021, the year “Epiphanies of Inspiration with Uncle Joe” was published, I included a copy of it and a copy of “Diary of Fatherhood (Series One)” in the Christmas packages of each member of my family. I affirmed them and highlighted their unique strengths on the autograph pages.

As our children started to unwrap their gifts, they quickly noticed the inclusion of books and went for it. Once they saw the books they left the rest of their packages and began to flip through their pages.

Oche was fixated on the autograph page and broke into a long, beautiful smile without saying a word.

Agbenu said, “Oh, Dad, your words are so sweet.”

Ofu threw a victory fist in the air and exclaimed, “Yes, I’ve been waiting for these!”

Then they all hugged me in a group with their “Thank you’s.” My joy was indescribable, as was theirs.

I remember this pleasant experience as if it happened a moment ago. Since then, I have continued to find it fascinating as they display my books on their bookshelves and keep reading them repeatedly.

Now and then, they’ll recall a story from Diary of Fatherhood and re-experience the fun.
Agbenu recently said, “I’m so glad we can read about our childhood memories.” Frequently, Ofu reads a piece habitually before he shuts down for the night. He often says, “Dad said…” or counters an opinion with, “But, dad said…”

It has been so rewarding to me that my children gladly receive my gift of values. I’ve been reflecting on our mutual joy since I presented them with my books and the recurring theme in my mind is “What my father gave me through oral transmission, I give to my children through telling and documentation.” It fuels my mission of intentional fatherhood.

“I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old– what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.” – Psalm 78:2-4

This is my testimony, a tangible legacy for my children and our posterity.
